6. Slough Feg - Ape Uprising

Half this album is a tale of our ape brethren throwing off their shackles and taking back their freedom. The other half is equally awesome.

5. Children - Hard Times Hanging at the End of the World

The world had it coming. This album purely rules. I knew I was hooked right when the opening riff on the opening track "Advanced Mind Control" kicked in.

4. Living Colour - Chair in the Doorway

Not Heavy Metal persay, but Chair in the Doorway is covered with heavy riffs. This is an album that I put on repeat listening to over and over. Catchy beats, flawless melodies, and well, just give it a listen.

3. Devin Townsend Project - Addicted

Strapping Young Lad frontman Devin Townsend is back with the second album in the Devin Townsend Project run of records. Addicted is a commercially oriented heavy album. The melodies are untouchable. Every song blends together to form and album of pure heart.

2. Steel Panther - Feel the Steel

This album is pure genius and was played at more parties this year than Andrew W.K.

Converge Steals the Show From Mastodon and Dethklok

Last night myself, Toothgnasher and some fellow metallions checked out the Mastodon/Dethklok co-headlining show at the San Jose Events Center. We unfortunately missed High on Fire due to a combination of us leaving late and it taking 500 years to get a parking space inside the venue's parking garage. We walked up to the will call booth right as Matt and co. finished their set, which sucked because because they've put on an amazing show the other times I've seen them and our friends that got there earlier all said they were great.

Luckily we got in and were situated on the floor before Converge took the stage and it was well worth it. The guys came onstage with a flurry of energy that, as far as I'm concerned, is unmatchable. Ben Koller was unable to be seen underneath the swirling mass of hair and drumsticks behind the kit. Nate Newton rocked the hell out of his bass. Kurt Ballou somehow managed to play every note perfectly while thrashing himself about. Jacob Bannon was easily the embodiment of stage energy however, as he continued to run around the stage, never staying in the same place for longer than 5 seconds or so. Unfortunately the crowd was pretty unresponsive to any of this as it was mostly made up of 15 year old non-metalheads along with metalheads who were "too tr00" for any "gay ass hardcore shit". While those in the pit were very receptive, there were far more "Fuck Yous" than cheers elsewhere in the audience. Many seemed to have a problem with Bannon's vocal delivery but honestly it doesn't sound much different than what he does on the albums. Also the band plays incredibly angry and emotional hardcore music, so what do you expect? Despite the negative crowd response however, Converge never once let up with their energy or intensity. Every note, drum hit and scream was spot on and the experience of their set (only the second time I've seen them) was exactly what I needed to start my night off right.

I was coming off a huge high after Converge's set and sat there kind of bummed out as I was expecting to be let down by Mastodon. Luckily however, they played a very good but still somewhat lacking set. I knew going in that they were going to play Crack the Skye in its entirety, which I wasn't too pleased about as I like their other albums more but I figured it would come off better live than on CD. Maybe it was the fact that most of the people around me seemed to be simply waiting for Dethklok and didn't seem into the set at all but I didn't find the live experience of the album to be as great as I'd read about from other websites. By this time we were near the back of the crowd and I did hear a ton of people singing along to the songs up in the front. I would imagine that if I were up there the initial set would have been way better. After this the band came out and played through some tracks from their earlier albums however, they played none of my favorites. The songs they did picked aren't regularly played live though and I'm sure it was a welcome treat for the dedicated fans. I had never seen them before though, so the omissions of "Blood and Thunder", "Iron Tusk", "Crystal Skull" and others were a bit disappointing. That's definitely my own fault though, for not making it out to see them before. Throughout the set there was a video playing that portrayed parts of Crack the Skye's story. This was interesting and definitely added something to the show but it seemed to be a distraction from the fact that the band had no energy whatsoever. They pretty much just stood there and played their instruments. Coming right after the energetic high that was Converge, this was a definite downer. Despite this however, the band played everything meticulously. All of the songs were spot on and even bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders doing Scott Kelly's (Neurosis) guest vocal parts on "Crack the Skye" and "Aqua Dementia" sounded perfect. The quality of the set, despite the fact that most of my favorites weren't played was definitely a pleasant surprise.

After Mastodon's set the crowd started to fill into the pit more and we decided to take a seat up in the bleachers. It was a pretty good decision as the Dethklok fans went absolutely nuts once the band hit the stage. As much as I love Metalocalypse, I've really never been able to get into the music of it. It's all well played but it just sounds extremely generic. That can pretty much describe Dethklok's set as well. As I haven't listened to DethAlbum II yet, all the songs they played from that album ran together for me. I did pick out a few choice tracks from the first season and album and while they did appeal to my nostalgia for those particular sequences in the episodes, they made me want to go watch my DVDs rather than listen to the songs. The main reason I was excited to see Dethklok however, was the tour exclusive animations that had been featured between songs the last time I saw them. I remembered them being hilarious and on par with some of the best sequences in the show. To my dismay however, all of the videos they played were exactly the same as the ones they'd done two years ago. There's been a whole second season and part of a third since that time, you would think they'd have some new animated material. Perhaps a guest appearance of fan favorite Dr. Rockso or the Revengencers? This would have added something to what was overall a very boring set for me. Everyone else around me enjoyed it but I think it was their first time seeing the band and thus they didn't experience the same sense of repetition.

Overall this show was definitely worth it. Probably even more so if you were there to see High on Fire. Mastodon was great and Dethklok were at least entertaining to some degree but the band of the night has to be Converge. They just had a new album come out so look for them on a headlining tour soon. They'll be guaranteed to have a more receptive crowd and will probably have even more energy.

Album Review: Baroness' Blue Record Will Cream Your Jeans/Blow Your Mind and Not Call You Back

I've been holding off from reviewing this album for a couple weeks. It might be that I'm extremely biased going in having read other reviews. Decibel magazine gave it 10/10 and went so far to call it album of the year (they're right). Metalsucks.net gave it 4 1/2 out of 5 horns. Metal Injection hails it as a return to what "Epic" truly is. And truthfully, I can't agree more. After using Blue Record as the background music for my late night homework excursions (and thus listening to it between ten and fifteen times in a row), I figure I should toss my hat in the ring and give it my review.

I want to keep this as short as possible as not to sound like I'm masterbating over this whole album.

Blue Record opens with a lulling mellow track "Bullhead's Psalm" before pushing you off the deep end into the heavy riffage of "The Sweetest Curse." The album takes off running, taunting you to catch up. I'll stop myself from writing a song by song review now, thank you.

Blue Record is filled with lows and highs, soft and rough sonic textures, peaks and valleys, heavy riffs and proggy tones all combining to make an EPIC record. Let's talk about those last two. This album is very heavy. To counter that Baroness has expertly used prog-rock meleodies, and they've done it without sounding overly-wanky (my main beef with prog). This is a heavy metal album, but believe me if you like anything that resembles "rock" music, you will like this album. You'll enjoy the album, but tracks to watch out for are: "The Sweetest Curse", "Jake Leg", "A Horse Called Golgotha" and "The Gnashing."

This is album of the year. I encourage everyone to give it a listen on Baroness' myspace. The entire Blue Record is streaming there. Listen to it for free, if you like it support this awesome band by buying some merch (they have a t-shirt cd combo for cheap).

Mounting our glorious steeds, we rode deep into the mountains of Santa Cruz until we came upon the Pagan Circle (no really, there is one). After slaughtering the dirty hippies within the surrounding area, we used their blood to channel the Gods of Old. Thus did Odin call down to us from Valhalla, commanding that we dedicate the next Epicast to him and the glory of Asgard with only the best Folk, Pagan and Viking Metal.

Time for a Hair Cut

Ok, so I've been growing my hair out for quite sometime now. Two years or something like that. It has slowed its progress quite a bit. I feel people have fallen in love with my hair and have forgotten to look past my beautiful, golden locks to see the person on the inside.

For most of my life, I'm pretty sure I've just gotten my head buzzed. It could be time for an actual hair cut. Now I'm pretty bad at making decisions like these, so help me decide on how to style my hair. I've compiled a list of possibilities and my thoughts on them. I will use a poll to decide the winner. Joey DeMaio Would Be Proud: Album Review: 3 Inches of Blood - Here Waits Thy Doom

I guess the reason I've waited so long to review this album was that my initial impressions of this album were less than satisfactory. 3 Inches of Blood is one of my favorite bands and upon hearing this album, I was sorely disappointed.

At the request of some close friends I was encouraged to give the album a closer listen. This time I loaded it up on my powerful sound system and cranked up the speakers.

Here Waits Thy Doom saw a departure of co-vocalist Jamie Hooper and thus departure from 3 Inches of Blood's iconic sound. Maybe that's why my first impression of this album was poor, it wasn't what I was expecting. Instead, 3 Inches of Blood takes a more traditional Heavy Metal sound akin to bands like Manowar.

Songs on the album spans fist-pumping anthems of "Battles And Brotherhood" to Southern Rockesque "Preachers Daughter" to Powerful riffs on "Silent Killer." With no original band members left, 3IOB brought their A-game. Cam Pipes Halfordesque vocals are as good as ever, but seem out of place on "Call of the Hammer."

Ok, so my first time listening to this I would've given it a 2/5, but after this second listen I'm giving Here Waits Thy Doom 3 1/2 out of 5. Give this album a chance to grow on you.

World Painted Blood will initially ship with four special collector's edition CD covers. Each of the four covers will display one-fourth of a continental map illustrated with human skulls and bones; when placed together, the four images form a complete and grisly map of the world.

All four of the initial CD packages will include a special blood-red, see-through top panel with the map displayed beneath it.

The World Painted Blood Deluxe Edition will have its own special layout of the map cover art and will be in a double-digipak housed in a blood-red, see-through plastic sleeve. The Deluxe Edition will include the World Painted Blood CD, the "Playing With Dolls" DVD, a 20-minute animated graphic novel featuring music from the album (including part of a new non-album song), and an expanded booklet.

Ok, so I know I'm not going to buy 4 versions of the same album to piece together a hokey map of the world, but based on the comments on Slayer.net a lot of people are. Not a bad way to increase album sales when you have an almost fanatical following.

Review: Endgame Restarts Megadeth

Endgame kicks off with a ripping instrumental of trade off solos between Dave Mustang and lead guitarist Chris Broderick showing right from the get-go that Megadeth is back and not fucking around.

The lead track, "Dialectic Chaos" jumps directly into "This Day We Fight!" and feels like the pace picks up even more. This is classic Megadeth Speed Metal. It's no surprise I'm two tracks in and I already like Endgame about a billion times more than the abomination that is United Abominations.

This album has everything: Songs about fighting, guns, fast cars, the economy, torture, insanity (can you have a Megadeth album without a song about insanity?). Oh and there's a love song and an acoustic song, but hey, we all know Dave has his sensitive side.

That all said, Dave Mustang's lyrics are actually kind of good. Although they do get a little cheesy on the title track "Endgame" which details in Sci-Fi fashion the end of Democracy in America. As for Dave's vocals, I guess you're either a fan or you're not.

The shining star of this album without a doubt is "Headcrusher." Pre-released months ago, "Headcrusher" quite truthfully blew everyone away. Right from the get go it slams your face against a brink wall and refuses to relent.

Master shredder Chris Broderick puts his balls to the wall for his deput Megadeth album and injects a bout of fresh energy into the band.

I give Endgame Four out of Five Hammers.

This was a mighty show. With Metal Beard on a mission in Buffalo, New York, I was braving the winter storms alone. And though the Northern Winds blew strong and bitter, The Sledge pounded away.

Blue Motherfuckin' Meanies

Well back in the day, before I became a metalhead, I listened to Punk, Ska, Reggae (wtf?), ect... One of my favorite bands was without a doubt The Blue Meanies. Sadly, I learned about them about a month after they're 2001 cessation of touring (they never announced an official break up).

They're sheer energy and brilliance is documented by their lengthy discography. I highly recommend this band for fans of Strapping Young Lad.

It ain't Metal, but it's Punk Ska Core Jazz Tainted Fusion. Check out this video for "Smash the Magnavox" off of Full Throttle (1997).

It finally happened. Metal Beard has broken the rules of Metal Beard's Bearded Bands all but once or twice in it's running. To finally cover his ass, he's implemented the "Honorary Beard" Accord, which allows him to give "Honorary Beards" to awesome bands. So it is written, so it shall be done.

This week he hit us with some hot female fronted bands, I forgot to do Dio's Dirty Secrets, we made a Big Four Feud Block and played a butt-load (yes a butt-load, that's like way more than a ton) of new stuff I've been meaning to play, but always run out of time on.

Ok, so these guys look like a bunch of theater geeks that got together and decided to write heavy metal inspired by Shakespeare. They dress up in Renaissance style garb and tights. Roboaurus Is Something Out of a Judas Priest Album

I got home late last night, threw some leftover pasta in the microwave and clicked on the tv. Immediately a commercial for the California Airshow in Salinas was on. I went to an airshow once when I was a little kid. Good times, but I'm not too interested in that stuff now. What did catch my eye was one of the attractions that they were advertising: Robosaurus. What the fuck is Robosaurus? I had to figure this out. From the few fleeting tv clips I saw, it was clearly a large, fire breathing mechanical dinosaur. Jumping on-line I quickly found Robosaurus' 1994 sytle website. Here's some promotional photos of Robosaurus:

The cool thing about Robosaurus is that it's controlled by a pilot in much the same way the mech in the film Aliens was controlled. Seeing this beast immediately reminded me of this Judas Priest concert footage:

Wolves In the Skeletonwitch Room (Part 2)

What's a better way to follow up an excellent dive show than with another concert? Metal Beard, some others and myself again trekked to San Fransisco. This time we would be seeing Ninth Moon Black, Minsk and the headliners Wolves In The Throne Room.

Ninth Moon Black set the mood with expertly played ambient doom tracks. Projected over them were...well, we couldn't really figure it out... graining black and white video from what looked like 1920s Russia. It was hard to tell. Ninth Moon Black also has a female drummer. Don't see that very often. After an excellent set by them Metal Beard and I moved up for Minsk.

As they started their set I knew we were in for some good shit. It's bands like these that are continually pushing me to explore more Doom Metal. Although these songs often blend together into one giant set, that's the point. They did thank us for coming out to see the show.

Up next was Wolves in the Throne Room. They just went up on stage and started playing. They played through their whole set without even acknowledging that the crowd was there. It was also near impossible to tell what song they were playing. There was no moshing at all. Everyone just stood there watching in awe with the occasional headbanging. The audience cheered for an encore, but no dice.

All in all it was a good ambient doomy =>black metal show, and a solid way to end the week/begin the weekend.

Wolves in the Skeletonwitch Room (Part 1)

I had a great end of the weekend/start of this week. Sunday night at Thee Parkside in SF Skeletonwitch played and Monday night at Slim's Wolves in the Throne Room rocked the house. I'm going to start my recap/review (...whatever) with Sunday night.

Four bands were lined up to play Thee Parkside that night. Only two really rocked. The first band were unsigned and to tell you the truth, I didn't catch their name. Everyone in the band looked like 80s thrashers, so I was looking forward to some good shit. Hey, remember when I said everyone in the band looked like 80s thrashers? Yea? Well, everyone except the singer. He looked like one of those emo/scenester douches. Thus my friends and I began referring to them as "Unfortunate Haircut." The instruments were fuckin' great, but the singer was VERY out of place. (On a side story, Metal Beard saw the singer outside after the set, Unfortunate Haircut singer attempted to pick up a chick via asking her if she "needed a piggyback ride." Her reply was "uhhh...no..." To which Unfortunate Haircut shot back: "well, if you need one, I'll give you one...") ...Moving right along...

The next band was the hardcore band Trap Them. Only about 10 people in the audience were digging them. I felt the singer had a terribly misdirected energy and stage presence. At one point he jumped off stage and ran into the audience. Everyone simply got out of the way and was looking at him like "what the hell is this guy doing?" At this point the singer realized only 10 people were digging it and he returned to the stage.

Next up were Saviours. This is where the show started to pick up. Finally some good quality metal. I recommend checking Saviours out HERE. After they owned the stage, it was time for the headliners to take over.

Skeletonwitch had a stage presence I haven't seen in a long time. They owned the crowd. Everyone in the band looked like they were having a fuckin' great time. Vocalist, Chance Garnette had expert audience interaction. He'd hold the mic to some of the front row thrashers for them to sing along with him. His crazy antics quickly got everyone having fun. I cite his interpreting movements to cymbal crashes: a lightning bolt hitting his chest, riping his chest open and then pulling out his own heart and holding it above the crowd. Yea, this was a fun fuckin' show.

When their set was over, the crowd still wanted more to which Chance replied in deathmetal growl: "WHY THE HELL NOT!"

HOLY GRAIL SIGNS TO PROSTHETIC RECORDS

If you listened to The Sledge (which I know you did) last night you would've heard a track called "Fight to Kill" from Holy Grail. I first caught onto these guys when they were originally with White Wizzard. Thanks to Mike from Early Man for posting this up on his blog: Whiplash

Prosthetic Records has signed the Los Angeles-based act HOLY GRAIL. The band, formerly known as SORCERER, features three former members of WHITE WIZZARD and takes its influence from such classic metal acts as IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, ACCEPT, and the SCORPIONS.

Vocalist James Paul Luna's Rob Halford-meets-Sebastian Bach voice belts out lyrics focusing on "chicks, vikings, ex-chicks, being tough, macho/machismo, FEMA, Fabio, Conan, rad dinosaurs, UFOs and Bilderberg Group," while guitarists James J LaRue and Eli Santana's dueling solos play out like a fencing match and bassist Blake Mount and drummer Tyler Meahl gallop like a pack of wild horses. After just a handful of shows, the band landed a two-page feature in the LA Weekly, and has planted its boot, firmly on the throat of L.A.'s metal scene.

Luna commented: "After months of losing our minds and shredding through many contracts and label offers, Prosthetic always stayed at the top of our list. They live and breathe the same L.A. metal air we do, and know what it takes to develop a band from ground zero. Business aside, we are beyond stoked to work with guys that have the same eccentric and twisted views on music, life, art and shred. Things can only get wilder from here!"

The band will play their first show, post signing, at the infamous Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip on July 30, with an out-of-town gig at the Jumping Turtle in San Marcos and a concert supporting CHILDREN OF BODOM on October 11 at the Glass House in Pomona. Expect to experience a blistering stage show and hear songs off the band's debut EP, "Improper Burial", due out this fall (which will feature two originals and two covers). The band will journey out on a West Coast tour in conjunction with the release, and before they enter the studio to start their full-length.

Ozzy Osbourne Breaks Up With Zack Wylde +Ozzy's a Douche

“Well, I’m getting a new guitar player as we speak,” said Ozzy, “and everyone has been saying to me for a long time, ‘Get Johnny 5!’ And I tried him at one time and I didn’t really give him a chance. We’ll see, I don’t know. I haven’t fallen out with Zakk, but Zakk’s got his own band, and I felt like my stuff was beginning to sound like Black Label Society. I just felt like I wanted a change, y’know?

“I’ve got a guy from Greece coming in – not the musical, the country of Greece – but I’m not going to say too much about it, cos I don’t know myself at this point. I’ve got a new album, I’m working on it as we speak. I’ve got a studio at my house and I’ve got a guy called Kevin Churko, the guy that did the last album [Churko also worked on Ozzy’s Under Cover album, produced Cheap Trick’s highly rated 2006 album Rockford, and has credits on releases by Britney Spears, Celine Dion and Shania Twain] – he’s great to work with.

I'm really not a big Ozzy fan. I mean, I respect the classics: Bark at the Moon, Crazy Train, ect. but he's a shell of the man he once was. Hopefully this record will give Ozzy the will power to stand against Sharon and perhaps press charges for abuse of the elderly.
