Why No Sledge Last Night?

Well, Wednesday was my birthday. Long story short I went mountain biking and broke my elbow. I just didn't feel like trekking to the station. I went out to see Inglorious Bastards with some friends. Last night fucking ruled. The night before ruled even harder. The Sledge will return next week.

Nine Year Old Replaces Zakk Wylde, Puts Zakk in Hospital

Well, Blizzcon happened and Zakk Wylde didn't play with Ozzy. Instead that nine year old kid that shreds Crazy Train did. True is, even the best nine year old guitarist in the world can't make Ozzy sound good.

Oh, and Zakk Wylde is in the hospital with a blood clot.

Playlist August 20th, 2009: The ABCs of METAL

Last night was a most triumphant return for The Sledge. Metal Beard and I devised a list of the ABC's of Metal. Basically, I was too lazy to think up a real playlist. Most of the bands you will disagree about (i.e. Manowar instead of Metallica, ect.), but too bad.

Later in the show we were joined by Sophie of Mass Destruction, Ruler of the Sea Lions. We embarrassed her some.

Tonight on THE SLEDGE! The ABC's of Metal

I have returned from the magical forests of Sequoia National Park. I will be playing songs that helped me survived that week long of running through the mountains and trees.

Also, I will be playing bands in the order from A to Z.

Metalbeard should be here with a very special edition of Metal Beard's Bearded Bands

This Week On The Sledge...

That's right. I'm going to be chaperoning Sequoia Running Camp because I'm a sadistic bastard. Yes. Running Camp. Hey, it was there that I first heard Slayer...

The Sledge will return next week.

Preorder 3 Inches of Blood's "Here Waits Thy Doom"

You can now pre-order 3 Inches of Blood's new album "Here Waits Thy Doom." For twenty big ones you get the CD and a limited edition Tee designed by comic book artist Rick Remender (The Punisher). That's not a bad deal for twenty bucks.

I'm tentively awaiting this album. From what I've heard, I'm really unsure if it'll be good or not. One thing is for sure, live the songs will kick ass.

Happy Birthday James Hetfield

Your present? CREAM PIE!!!! Some lucky folks got to do what everyone has wanted to do since StAnger came out.

Happy Birthday, but please, start making good music again...

Manly Things

Here at The Sledge we are about all things manly. From axes, swords and armor to walking your dog, beards, courage and honor, manly things take precedence. That is why I want to share with you all a fine blog I stumbled across: The Art of Manliness.

There is a wealth of information about manly things. For example, their post categories include: "A Man's Life," "Health and Sports," and "Manly Skills" among others. I highly recommend checking out their post on bodyweight workouts.

Here I thought I'd feature a post of George S. Patton motivational posters from The Art of Manliness.

"...Patton, like every single man from history, was far from perfect. His love of war bordered on the crazy, and his behavior and outspoken nature often got him in trouble. His most famous controversial incident occurred when he slapped a man suffering from “battle fatigue” in a hospital and called him a coward.

But he was decidedly good at his job. He was born to lead men in battle. And while one can certainly disagree with his philosophy, he was undeniably a compelling leader and master motivator of men. His words will give any man a needed kick in the pants."
Here's a short compilation of these words:

Please red the original post at The Art of Manliness, I guarantee you will find this site worth your while.

This was a mighty show. With Metal Beard on a mission in Buffalo, New York, I was braving the winter storms alone. And though the Northern Winds blew strong and bitter, The Sledge pounded away.

On this week's show I hit a lot of tracks I've been wanting to play for a while (Bison B.C., The Sword, Early Man, ect...). Ronnie Dio & The Prophets also made an appearance with their classic hit single "Our Year" on Dio's Dirty Secrets. I ended the show with a special song dedicated to Metal Beard: Psychostick's "BEER!"

I'd like to thank everyone who called in with requests. See Ya next week and don't forget, you can request songs in advance by commenting here or emailing: sledgemetalkzsc [at] gmail [dot] com.

Blue Motherfuckin' Meanies

Well back in the day, before I became a metalhead, I listened to Punk, Ska, Reggae (wtf?), ect... One of my favorite bands was without a doubt The Blue Meanies. Sadly, I learned about them about a month after they're 2001 cessation of touring (they never announced an official break up).

They're sheer energy and brilliance is documented by their lengthy discography. I highly recommend this band for fans of Strapping Young Lad.

It ain't Metal, but it's Punk Ska Core Jazz Tainted Fusion. Check out this video for "Smash the Magnavox" off of Full Throttle (1997).

Advice For Young Bands: Tape Trade

Cosmo Lee of Invisible Oranges deals out some advice for start up Metal acts: Give away your music for free. This is not a new practice. In Thrash Metal's haydays, tape-trading was the name of the game. Bands were swapping tapes with each other to make connections and find out who was doing what. Check out (and heed) Cosmo's advice.

Royalties With Dave Ellefson

Have you ever wondered how much money an artist gets for that $14.55 CD purchased at a record store. Turns out it's not much. Dave Ellefson formerly of Megadeth gives us the low-down on how royalties in the recording industry work.

Is Anyone Else Disappointed With the Stops on the High on Fire / Early Man Tour?

Here's the dates for the California tour:

Friday, August 7th Noctumum Eureka, CA
Saturday, August 8th Harlows Sacramento, CA
Monday, August 10th Starline Fresno, CA
Tuesday, August 11th Fat Cat Modesto, CA
Wednesday, August 12th Alex's Bar Long Beach, CA
Saturday, August 15th Casbah San Diego, CA **with High On Fire and Earthless

As much as I'm sure places like Fresno and Modesto get a lack of quality acts coming through there. It's like they wanted to hit the shit-holes of California. Not even a Bay Area stop? Come on! I know High on Fire has played San Fransisco quite a bit, so I could see them not wanting to go there for a while, but why not replace it with an Oakland or Berkley stop?
